Why Are My Drawing Tablet Lines Shaky or Broken?

A drawing tablet can be connected, the pen can be recognized, and everything can look normal at first glance. Then you start drawing a slow, careful line and notice something is wrong.

The line doesn't stay smooth.

It may wobble more than expected, break in the middle, or look uneven even though your hand is steady.

This is particularly frustrating when you are working on line art, handwriting, or anything that depends on controlled strokes. And because the problem appears directly in the artwork, it is easy to assume the pen or tablet itself has gone bad.

That is not necessarily the case.

One useful first question is whether the problem happens in every application or only in the software you are currently using.

Check Whether It Happens Outside Your Drawing Software

Before changing drivers or adjusting settings, make a few simple strokes somewhere else.

You can test the pen in the tablet driver or use a basic drawing application available on the computer.

Then compare the result with the application where you first noticed the problem.

This matters because the drawing software can affect how pen input is handled. A line that looks unstable in one program does not automatically mean the tablet is producing unstable input.

If it does, try the alternative input method and test the same slow stroke again.


Try the Latest Correct Tablet Driver

If the problem is not limited to one application, check the tablet driver.

A driver problem can affect how pen movement is interpreted before it reaches the drawing software.

The important part is to change one thing at a time and keep the test simple. That makes it much easier to tell whether you are dealing with the drawing software, the driver, the computer environment, or the tablet itself.

When a line starts shaking or breaking, the first instinct is often to blame the pen.

It is worth checking the rest of the chain first.
